Joe Quesada - Another Foot In Mouth Moment...

"Yeah, of course — that’s what people want to think. But let’s be clear: The DC relaunch is a response to everything Marvel’s been doing, and not the other way around. You don’t set fire to your entire house for no good reason. And by the way, I tip my hat to them. They did something daring and it worked for them. They boosted sales of some of their books. But Avengers vs. X-Men is something that’s been on our docket for publishing for several years now."

– Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, reacting to suggestions that Avengers vs. X-Men is a response to DC’s New 52

Like Ryan Higgins I call bullshit. Joe what you said here is a load of shit, and you must love the taste toe jam if you truly believe this garbage.
I have one question though: What the fuck has Marvel been doing Joe? I can't remember when Marvel did something that made me think that DC needed to step up their game. The "New Rejiggered 52" from DC was not in response to what Marvel was doing. DC set fire to their house to try and revitalize DC and the comic book industry in general. In some ways it worked,in others it didn't, but at least they were doing something that was worth my money.

Avengers Vs. X-Men may have been on your docket to publishing for several years, but I'm not looking forward to it, because it sounds like the plot for another fighting game from Capcom staring Marvel characters.

If you do find Marvel comics from the universe where "DC rejiggered because of what Marvel was doing," please send them to me; I'd like to read comic books from that universe.

I got the quote from Comic Book Resources.

  1. "What the fuck has Marvel been doing Joe?"

How about dominating the comic book industry for decades? If you don't think DC gutting and rebooting their entire lineup had anything to do with Marvel you're a fucking retard.

    1. I should delete the above post because this troll couldn't even reveal their name, but I won't because it is a perfect example of nerd rage.
Maybe you, Mr. Troll, could fill me in on what you think has been good from Marvel in the last decade? Or why it is harder to find DC back issues than Marvel back issues? Or why DC trades dominate resale charts? I know a good question you can answer Mr. Troll; How much did you pay for Marvel Point One?

    2. You won't delete it cause you only get 2 comments a month at your dumb Marvel troll blog lol.

I don't know how any of that junk you just brought up has anything to do with Marvel being the dominant sales leader before the New 52 relaunch. The New 52 exists because DC wanted a bigger chunk of the pie chart come sales announcement time. How is this so hard for you and Higgins to understand?

So, when you mean dominate you mean fix the game right? Because it is easy to dominate sales charts when you charge $3.99 for a good chunk of your line, and when you discount heavily and have ridiculous variant incentives to get unit numbers up. How is this hard for you to understand?

  3. I'm not saying Marvel wasn't dominant due to nefarious reasons. Regardless of marketing tactics, Marvel was on top for a long time and DC was like "Aw hell naw" and rejiggered I'd say a lot of what both companies do is directly in response to what the other is doing. This is how free market competition works.

    1. According to your free market comment then AvX would then be in response to what DC is doing, and you could say that Marvel (created as Timely comics in 1939) came about because of DC (which began in 1934 as National Allied Publications).

Companies strive to be the best and if being the best means doing drastic things then that is what you do, but I don't believe for a moment that the "Rejiggering" was solely a direct response to what Marvel was doing. I do believe that it was in response to declining sales, fallen readership, and many other factors, not just a response to the "shit" Marvel was releasing.

I find it funny that when I point out the fact that Marvel has been chasing its own tail since the "Rejiggering", because they can't seem to understand the digital market, working with retailers, and making it about quality not quantity, I'm called a hater. When all I want is for Marvel to stop trying to gimmick their way to the top and actually get there by putting out a product that deserves to top sales charts.
