The Comic Conspiracy Comic Book Club - June 2014 - Hellblazer (Vol. 1): Original Sins

Welcome to The Comic Conspiracy Comic Book Club monthly announcement. On the last episode of The Comic Conspiracy every month we will discuss that month's comic book club selection at some length, and announce the next comic book club selection we will be reading. There is a poll for every Comic Conspiracy Book Club Selection here at Conspirator Brock.com; so come here to cast your vote. (The poll can only be viewed in the web version of Conspirator Brock.com, and it will be located on the right side of the page underneath the "About Me" box.)

Comic Book Club Selection for June 2014: Ryan's Pick

Hellblazer (Vol. 1): Original Sins

Trade Paperback - $16 on Amazon

Kindle - $9.99

Comixology - $12.99

"Following in the vivid footsteps of Swamp Thing and Sandman, here is an occult thriller that teeters between our world and the next, during one man's non-stop adventure. Bedraggled medium and exorcist John Constantine prowls the outskirts of society in search of inner peace, only to find himself the lone defender of our world from the forces of evil."
- Amazon.com

Ryan's selection for this month's Comic Conspiracy Comic Book Club is Hellblazer (Vol. 1): Original Sins by Jaime Delano with art from John Ridgway and Alfredo Alcala. If you have read any of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Garth Ennis's Preacher, or Neil Gaiman's Sandman then Hellblazer is a comic you should check out.
John Constantine is a con man with magical abilities, and the attitude of an asshole. He smokes excessively, shags constantly, and doesn't shy away from a pint or mind altering substance. Constantine would never be on a top ten heroes list, but he is the unlikely savior of the world from some seriously evil forces.
I read this title for the first time a few years ago, right after they started to reissue the trades with volume numbers, and I have been enjoying the ride ever since. I can't wait to revisit this volume, especially since the TV show Constantine is coming this fall to NBC.
So, get yourself a copy of Hellblazer (Vol. 1): Original Sins, and see for yourself that a savior can come in a trench coat drenched in the smell of cigarettes, booze, and magic.

We will discuss this title at length on the episode of The Comic Conspiracy that we will record on June 30, 2014.

Neil Gaiman Returns to Marvel...Is this Marvel's WTF Moment?

I am completely in shock about the announcement from Marvel that Neil Gaiman will be writing working on the last issue of Age of Ultron (CBR Article / Bleeding Cool Article), and that the guest that was going to be brought in with that issue is Gaiman's creation Angela from Spawn. This is definitely out of left field, and I'm not sure how things will play out. We will just have to wait and see with the last issue of Age of Ultron how much of an influence Angela will have in the Marvel Universe. If that wasn't enough from left field it seems to be that Gaiman will also help co-write issue five of Guardians of the Galaxy. If this is permanent then I might be buying a Marvel book after almost a year of being Marvel free on my pull list. If Gaiman continues to write Guardians of the Galaxy (which would be amazing) I would be sold on the book completely. Just like the appearance of Angela in Age of Ultron, we will just have to wait and see where things go with Gaiman's involvement with Marvel, and if a Marvel book will become a staple on my pull list again. CBR has a poll up "What's Your Reaction to Neil Gaiman Returning to the Marvel U?", cats your vote here.

New Sandman mini series by Neil Gaiman 2013

Brand new Sandman story by Niel Gaiman with art by J.H. Williams III due out next year. I am so excited for this. By far this was the best news out of San Diego Comic Con, and if you didn't think so then you haven't read Sandman.

But I'll let you hear it from Neil himself.

We should get started on planning the midnight party, but for no enjoy this Sandman teaser piece from J.H. Williams III.

Random Anime Pick - Episode 60

My random "Anime" pick on The Comic Conspiracy: Episode 60 is a film called Princess Mononoke that was written, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. The movie at its core is a piece about the conflicts between nature and technology, which is shown in an amazing, and gripping way in the film.
It was released in Japan on July 12, 1997, and then in the United States on October 29, 1999. I became interested in the film because of the mass advertisements about the voice talent used in dubbing the film over for an American audience. Here is a list of the American voice actors who made the English Dub accessible (in my opinion) to a larger audience:

Billy Crudup - Ashitaka
Billy Bob Thornton - Jigo
Minnie Driver - Lady Eboshi
John Di Maggio - Gonza
Claire Danes - San
John DeMita - Kohroku
Jada Pinkett Smith - Toki
Gillian Anderson - Moro
Keith David - Okkoto
Corey Burton - Additional voices
Tara Strong - Additional voices (as Tara Charandoff)

The film is beautiful to watch and very engaging and I highly recommend it for anyone who has an interest in cartoons. A funny thing about this film I was not aware that Neil Gaiman had some adaption credits on this until recently and so now I like the film a little bit more. Go check it out for yourself though.

Random Comic Pick - Episode 28

My random comic pick on The Comic Conspiracy: Episode 28 is Sandman #8 written by Neil Gaiman with art by Mike Dringenberg. The stand alone story in this issue is titled "The Sound of Her Wings" and it is one of my favorite Sandman stories. This issue marks the first appearance of Death of the Endless in comics. It is a simple story in which Sandman and his sister Death walk and talk as she goes about her duty of collecting the dead to take them to the other side.
I instantly fell in love with this story and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great story. You can find the actual issue but it will cost you a little bit because it is the first appearance of Death, but there is an Essential Vertigo copy out there that is cheap, you can pick up Sandman (Vol.1): Preludes and Nocturnes (which collects Sandman #1-8), or you can snag a digital version from out Comixology digital store to give it a read. I have enjoyed this story so much that I actually used a panel from it as my first banner on my other blog.

"The Sound of Her Wings" is and will always be one of my favorite comics of all time. Check it out.

Remember Comics Conspiracy is a great place to order comics and you can also download comics at the Comics Conspiracy - Comixology Storefront for your computer, tablet or phone.
